MLB Weekly Winners and Losers: Three Up, Three Down From June 15-21

That Friday off was still an unusual thing, but I think it helped the Phillies offense to reset. The results came quickly, popping off 21 runs in the next two games and seeing some bats perk up again.

Three up

Kyle Schwarber – It’s June so you knew that Schwarber was going to go off this month, but somehow he’s been getting better. His five home runs this past week demonstrate he’s locked back in after a stretch where certain things simply felt a bit off. It’s a good thing as they enter the section of their calendar where they should be making some inroads into playoff contention owing to a lighter schedule. The squad is good when its stars are playing well, and Schwarber is playing well.

Bryce Harper –As for the players playing well, Harper used a batting practice session to become reoriented following a portion of June where he looked lost. He’s had periods like that where everything is just utterly mistimed but he has finally gotten himself back on track, with a heavier bat no less!

Zack Wheeler – I think when the season is over, we can look back and appreciate what Wheeler is accomplishing. His two starts this week were excellent, not fantastic. But that is not the big thing. He has nearly returned to his old speed less than a year after undergoing thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. It was definitely dangerous to those that doubted him, but he really wasn’t on my mind to get there that quickly. You can still see him not be able to go his old, full seven inning self yet as the exceptional command he has is coming back more slowly than the velocity, but it really is something that we should be marveling at more.

Three down

Brandon Marsh –.200/.231/.360 for the week isn’t going to do the All-Star campaign any favors as the Phillies seek for him to be voted in. Marsh probably had a horrible week, hasn’t looked that great, but hey, we all have bad weeks.

Gabriel Rincones, Jr. – Am I the only one who thinks Rincones is a little over his head at the moment?

Andrew Painter — Honest question: do you think Painter will be back in the majors this season? You’ve have to assume with the plan in place of giving him at least 7-10 days off before he starts throwing again, then trying to get the fastball where it needs to be, does the team intend on his returning at all? They may be able to get a deadline arm for cheaper cost than they first imagined. This means they can let Painter take his time getting correct.
