Stanley Cup Final Update: Hurricanes Rally in Game 4 to Even Series and Shift Momentum
Las Vegas: This series will take you by surprise in more ways than one.
For instance, you should not be surprised if the game-winning goal is scored as a result of a broken play and your captain tumbling as he whacks a backhand into the cage in a 5-3 victory for the Carolina Hurricanes over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 4, which tied the best-of-seven series 2-2.
The captain of the Hurricanes, Jordan Staal, responded by saying, “It’s a wild ride, isn’t it?” “A lot of emotion, a lot of ups and downs.”
Following the substitution of Brandon Bussi for Frederik Andersen in the third period of Game 3, head coach Rod Brind’Amour made the decision to not only start Bussi but also to keep Andersen on the bench as a healthy scratch. “I had a minute-long conversation with our goalie coach, and he said, ‘Freddie needs a break,’ so we went with the other guy (Bussi),” Brind’Amour said. Additionally, if you are going to give him a break, you should give him a break. Even if he dressed himself and did everything else, it wouldn’t really be a night off for him.
For their new goaltender, Carolina came out with a strong performance.
Logan Stankoven recovered a puck that had been muffed by his Vegas counterpart Carter Hart and then pushed it in with a backhand shot, giving the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead just one minute into the game.
Soon after that, Shea Theodore was called for a tripping penalty, and Carolina was immediately put on the power play. Bussi had to be on his game when Mark Stone grabbed a shorthanded breakaway, and his team rewarded him when Jackson Blake made it 2-0 off a spectacular feed from Taylor Hall on the same power play. ” ‘Stanks’ and ‘Hallsy,’ credit to those two,” Blake said. ” Bussi had to be on his game.” Every single one of us is just trying to keep our heads up and put in a lot of effort in order to get pucks back and play the way we know we are capable of. Tonight, we were fortunate enough to have things go in our favor.
It has been the case for the most of the series that Carolina has dominated the first period; however, Stone was able to get his Golden Knights back into the game when Theodore sent him in alone seven minutes into the interval. Stone pretended to take a slapshot in order to stop Bussi, and then he duped the goaltender in order to score the opening goal of the evening for Vegas.
Following that, the teams took turns testing each other with stretch passes; nevertheless, the following goal would once again come on the power play.
After Vegas was called for a penalty for having too many players on the court, Jordan Staal found a rebound in front of him off of a point shot by Shawn Gostisbehere and he popped it past Hart to make the score 3-1.
Additionally, due to the fact that this series has been nothing but turmoil, the period came to a close with Brayden McNabb shooting a shot past Bussi. However, the clock had already reached zero, therefore it was not considered a goal.
Despite the fact that Vegas turned the tide early, Carolina continued to struggle in the second period.A wonderful feed from Rasmus Andersson was followed by a goal that was smashed home by William Karlsson.
As Brett Howden continued his scorching scoring streak in the playoffs, he tied the game with a wrister that deceived Bussi. He did this by using K’Andre Miller as a screen instead of Bussi.
“We obviously didn’t have a great second and the game was back-and-forth again, but we stuck with what we wanted to do in the third and we were patient,” Staal commented.
Las Vegas had a great deal of opportunities in the third period, including a shot from Jack Eichel that hit the crossbar, but the Knights were unable to find a way to beat Bussi once more.
Seth Jarvis, who was all by himself in front of the stage, was robbed by Hart, and the play continued with four Vegas players racing after Jarvis and Staal, who was now all by himself. This was yet another chaotic sequence of events.
While Staal was tumbling to the ice, he was able to backhand a shot that beat Hart for the game-winning goal. The pass that Staal received from Nikolaj Ehlers was made with the incorrect hand.
“When you watch him all the time, you get spoiled,” Brind’Amour is quoted as saying about Staal. “I coach him all the time, so I know I’m spoiled.” That is exactly what he is, every single night of the week.”
“I’ve been telling the guys to get to the hoop for, I don’t know how long… years,” Staal continued. “I’ve been telling them to.” There is the possibility of getting there, and there are good things that happen there, particularly the manner that they play. It’s just that you need a push.”
Despite the fact that Vegas went with an empty net with two minutes remaining and got some excellent looks, Carolina was able to get an empty-netter with 54 seconds remaining when Ehlers put a bank shot all the way down from the defensive zone.
Following his first victory in the NHL playoffs of his career, Bussi finished with 18 saves on 21 shots. According to him, the fact that he participated in a portion of Game 3 was beneficial. “It’s hard to get game reps in practice, so that helped for sure,” noted Bussi. “But credit to our team for our work ethic in practice and all the skates I’ve been doing to keep me ready.”
A new episode of the series features the Canes. Game 5 is slated to take place in Raleigh on Thursday, June 11 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
