Thunder vs Spurs Game 2 Box Grades: OKC Evens Series as San Antonio Backcourt Issues and Turnovers Mount
When it comes to the most disturbing aspects of the game that took place last night, the fact that San Antonio was defeated falls somewhere between fourth and fifth on my list. By a wide by, the most significant problem is the injury sustained by Dylan Harper, who has been utterly indispensable throughout this postseason run and is unquestionably the Spurs’ second-best player in the series up to this point. San Antonio’s tendency to commit turnovers has been the second most frustrating issue as of late, particularly considering the fact that a significant number of these turnovers were unintentional and unquestionably cost the Spurs the game. In any event, one bright spot is that the box office performance from the previous evening is uncommon and intriguing in a number of different ways, so let’s get started:
The reference period that is utilized for grading has shifted from the set of regular season games that have been played since 2012-2013 to the set of postseason games that have been played since 2012-2013. This is because we have now moved into the postseason. The play-in games are included in this package, unless it is specifically stated otherwise below. The total number of games in this group is 1,193 as of the end of the 20th of May, 2026.
Rare Box Score Stats
Let’s begin with the statistics of the team based on the graded box score. In the 1,193 postseason games that have been played since 2012-2013 (also known as the “reference period”), everything that is mentioned in this section captures the frequency of various statistical combinations:
- This marks the thirty-first game in which the team that emerged victorious had a turnover margin of eleven points or more.
- In light of the fact that Oklahoma City had such a positive turnover margin, it is quite surprising that they did not win in a blowout. With a turnover margin of -11 or better and a point difference of no more than +9, they became the eighth team to emerge victorious in the history of the competition.
- With FG%, 3P%, and FT% values that were at least as good as 48.81%, 40%, and 88.24%, respectively, San Antonio became only the eighth team without a winning record to achieve this feat.
- During this game, there were a significant number of offensive rebounds, with the Spurs grabbing 16 and OKC grabbing 17 of them. The fact of the matter is that this is only the 22nd game in the reference era in which at least 33 offensive boards were recovered. This represents around 1.76% of the 1,193 postseason games that were played during this time period, which is equivalent to approximately one in every 54 games.
- The offensive rebounding figures are especially shocking when you take into consideration the fact that both teams had a relatively excellent field goal percentage, which meant that there wasn’t a significantly high number of rebounds available. In point of fact, with regard to the reference period, there is only a single other game in which both teams shot at least 47.87% from the field and recorded more than 33 offensive boards. In that other game, Oklahoma City prevailed once more, this time over
- Minnesota in the fourth game of the Western Conference Finals in the year 2025.
With FG%, 3P%, and FT% differentials that were as awful or worse as -0.94, -3.89, and -9.07 percentage points, respectively, the Thunder became only the eleventh person to win during the reference period to achieve such a distinction.
Now, let’s take a look at the statistics for each individual Spurs player, which includes both positive and negative news:
- It is only the fifteenth time during the 1996-1997 postseason that a player has hauled down more than forty-one rebounds in two consecutive playoff games (play-in games are not included in this count). Wemby’s accomplishment is unprecedented. The data that are now available do not capture the number of times a player has behaved in this manner with Isaiah Hartenstein blatantly holding his off arm at all times; nonetheless, I am assuming that this number is significantly smaller.
- Regrettably, Stephon Castle has made history by becoming the only player in the history of genuine playoff games since 1996-1997 to accumulate a total of twenty turnovers over the course of two consecutive games. Previously, the highest score was 17, which was a record that was previously held by both LeBron James and Cade Cunningham.
What are Team Graded Box Scores?
In a nutshell, these box scores are used to grade winner-loser differentials for basic box score statistics. The grade is determined by the winning team’s differential in comparison to the differentials of other NBA winners over a specified reference period. One way to think of it is as a report card that provides information on how a particular winner did in comparison to different winners. The reference period that is used begins with the beginning of the 2012-2013 season and continues until the most recent date of play. This period only includes games that fall into the same season category; for example, regular season and playoff games are not compared to one another.
