AJ Dybantsa scored 36 points, Robert Wright III added a career-high 30 points while being booed virtually every time he touched the ball, and No. 22 BYU broke a four-game losing streak with a 99-94 victory over Baylor on Tuesday night. Baylor was the opponent. As a result of Wright’s decision to back out of a deal to return to the Bears after spending his rookie season with them, the supporters at Foster Pavilion expressed their strong disapproval of his decision. Baylor students screamed “traitor” multiple times throughout the game, and his pregame appearance was met with loud boos from the crowd.

With the help of Dybantsa and Wright, as well as some key plays from Richie Saunders, BYU (18-6, 6-5 Big 12) overcame an early 12-point hole to avoid matching their longest skid since losing the final five games of the 2004-2005 season. Richie Saunders was a vital player in the Cougars’ victory. Tounde Yessoufou, a freshman guard, scored a season-high 37 points, while Cameron Carr added 24 points for the Bears (13-11, 3-9). The Bears were able to cut a 17-point lead with less than five minutes remaining to four points, but they still fell to 1-5 at home in Big 12 play. In the fifth 30-point game of his freshman season, Dybantsa was 14 of 20 from the field and had seven assists. This performance is likely to increase the likelihood that he will be selected in the top five of the NBA draft this summer.

BYU took the lead for good early in the second half when Saunders, who had 15 points and nine rebounds, stole the ball away from Carr and hit a basket at the other end of the court. Saunders then gave BYU the lead for good. After a three-pointer from Carr gave the Bears their largest lead at 33-21, Baylor scored only two of its last 12 shots before halftime, and the Bears and Baylor went into the break knotted 41-all. The Bears were shooting 71% from the field at the time. Next up for BYU is playing Colorado at home on Saturday. When Baylor takes on No. 24 Louisville in Fort Worth on Saturday, the game will take place at a neutral venue.
