Columbus & St. John’s Vianney Win The Throne Basketball Championships – Full Recap

On the throne is a new team consisting of both male and female players. After defeating the Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, New York) girls and boys teams, respectively, the St. John’s Vianney Regional Lancers (Holmdel, New Jersey) and the Columbus Explorers (Miami, Florida) became victorious in the national prep basketball championship. Both teams won their respective brackets and emerged victorious.

The victory, despite the fact that they were achieved against the same school, was accomplished in two distinct ways.

In order to even get out of regulation, the Lancers, who claimed victory with a score of 71-68 in double overtime, required a remarkable shot. Madison Kocis, a student at Penn, made a fantastic, long, rainbow-arching three-point shot with five seconds remaining to tie the game at 55. This allowed her to come back from a four-point disadvantage that she had been facing with twenty seconds remaining in the game.

The pace of the game was dominated by Emily McDonald of LuHi, who also made her eighth three-point shot of the game during the extra period. At the end of regulation time, neither team was able to take control of the game.

There, Taylor Sofilkanich, whose clutch layup in the semifinals took the Lancers to the title game, put the finishing touches on her breathtaking performance, which was a masterpiece in its own right. When she made a layup through contact against a double team in the closing twenty seconds of the fourth quarter, she was a significant contributor to the comeback that was taking place. Now, in the latter part of the second session of overtime, she made her ninth block of the game and then sank a layup on the opposite side to give the Lancers a five-point advantage with 37 seconds remaining in the contest.

In the end, it boiled down to free throws. At the twenty-minute mark, Charlotte Bradley had the opportunity to score a goal.

She was instructed to wait in line, but she failed to make either of them. Then, however, she was presented with a second opportunity, and she purposefully fouled a second time. She was able to find redemption, making both of them, and providing the Lancers with the lead that, in the end, would not be given up.

Sofilkanich produced a near-triple-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and nine blocks, while Kocis and Stella Lockhart led the Lancers in scoring with 18 points each with their respective contributions.

When costar Savannah Swords fouled out with twenty seconds left in the fourth quarter, McDonald took over and scored a game-high 25 points and had ten rebounds. He also took over the possession of the ball. In the course of the game’s 26 minutes, Swords racked up 16 points and eight boards.

Extra time was required twice in order to determine the winner of the tournament because it was so close.

Caleb Gaskins, who wrapped up an utterly outstanding weekend, was the driving force behind the Explorers’ victory, which they achieved by a score of 66-55. They had a lead of up to 19 points, and after going on a surge in the second quarter, they did not allow LuHi to come that close to catching up to them.

At the end of the game, Gaskins finished with 28 points, shooting 9-12 from the field and making 8-10 from the free throw line. Furthermore, he got ten rebounds, four assists, and a block in his game.

Akol Nyok was a remarkable player in terms of his ability to run the rim and his size. He was successful in all three of his field goal attempts, but more importantly, he blocked five shots and gained eight boards. Felipe Quinones finished the game with a total of ten points, four rebounds, and four assists. He also made some impressive jumpers.

With the exception of Moussa Kammisoko, who scored 23 points while shooting 50 percent, LuHi was unable to get going. Kayden Allen, a star forward, only scored 12 points while shooting 55% from the field and committing three turnovers. Jamaal McKnight, a junior point guard, scored five points on two-of-twelve shots, while Peyton Howell, also a junior point guard, scored six points on one-of-six shots. No one else scored more than six points.

In the competition, the Explorers were able to dominate, as seen by their victory over Plainfield (New Jersey) in the semifinals by a score of forty points and their victory over Sunnyslope (Phoenix, Arizona) in the first round, which was 64-50 despite Sunnyslope’s competitive first half. Throughout the duration of The Throne, Gaskins averaged 27 points on 62.5% shooting, giving him a total of 81 points in 86 minutes of play. In addition, he had 10.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and at least one block each game. Jordan Fisher finished with a point total of at least ten in each of the three games, including twenty-one in the semifinals.

LuHi, the incumbent champion, was defeated by the team from Columbus, putting an end to their attempt to win the title again. The Explorers, who triumphed in 2023, have regained their position as the best team.
