Sam Darnold, the starting quarterback for the Seahawks, can still vividly recall the time when he was seeing ghosts while playing against the Patriots. At this point, he has moved on to envisioning himself wearing a Super Bowl ring, even though it would come at the price of a franchise that was his Kryptonite in the beginning of his career.

Darnold started his career with the Jets and then moved on to the Panthers. During his time with the Panthers, he had a record of 0-4 versus the Patriots for both teams. The lowest point occurred in 2019, when the Patriots humiliated the Jets by a score of 33-0. Darnold completed 11 of 32 passes for 86 yards and four interceptions, and he also lost one fumble. When Darnold was caught on microphone during the game, he admitted that the Patriots had him “seeing ghosts.”

For Darnold, things have undergone tremendous transformations over the course of the past six seasons. His journeyman career did not come to an end there; in 2024, he found success in Minnesota, where he led the Vikings to a record of 14-3 and a postseason appearance. At the time when the team placed an emphasis on rookie J.J. McCarthy, who was chosen over Darnold, found himself in Seattle this season with the intention of demonstrating that his time spent with the Vikings was not an accident.

After that, Darnold astonished the National Football League for a second consecutive season by leading the Seahawks to a record of 14-3. He became the first quarterback since Tom Brady to record back-to-back seasons with 14 wins, and he also led the Seahawks to the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. And the unusual plot reached its climax while Super Bowl LX was being played on Sunday night.

In the victory for the Seahawks, Darnold completed 19 of 38 passes for 201 yards and one touchdown. He was a key contributor to the offense that converted five field goals and two touchdowns on its way to claiming the franchise’s second-ever Super Bowl title with a convincing 29-13 victory. The victory made Darnold the seventh active quarterback in the National Football League to lead a team to a Super Bowl victory as a starter. He joins the ranks of Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, Matthew Stafford, and Jalen Hurts on the list of quarterbacks who have accomplished this feat.

“It’s unbelievable, with everything that’s happened in my career. But to do it with this team, I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Darnold stated in his interview. “As long as you believe in yourself, anything is possible.”
