Would you stake your house on the Texas Longhorns winning the season? Can UT’s worst team win a game the rest of the way? After Saturday’s 29-21 loss to the Florida Gators, things look bad for Texas.

Texas had a chance to tie the game on the final drive, showing how awful the 2-3 Gators are. This was the worst Steve Sarkisian Texas team since the 2021 Arkansas game. Poor offense. Poor defense. Poor special teams. Only four or five good plays make it hard to win games.

Start with defense. That side of the ball has saved the squad most of the year. Texas may be the defense that played Ohio State hardest this year. That wouldn’t be known after Saturday.

On the first series, a 13-play, 84-yard touchdown drive, the Longhorns defense struggled to stop Gators quarterback DJ Lagway and the offense. Two touchdowns and an interception on 21 of 28 for 298 yards by Lagway. Despite not being spectacular, he was the superior quarterback and looked more like a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate.

Three 10-play drives and 457 yards were allowed by Texas’ defense. The nation’s best side of the ball shouldn’t do this.

Special teams sucked too. A Texas punt was blocked. The second-quarter block led to a Florida safety. Two Horns touchbacks should have been downed around the Gators’ one-yard line.

The Texas offense is terrible to watch. The offensive line stinks. We all know Kyle Flood is a legendary offensive line coach. Not much of what he’s teaching this group is sticking. Texas quarterback Arch Manning was sacked six times, and while some were his fault, the line must improve.

Manning yips. He has joyful feet. His basic skills as a third-string quarterback are lacking. He doesn’t read defenses. The first sight of difficulty sends him scrambling like a spaz. Overthrowing wide open receivers deep and underthrowing them short.

His thinking is jumbled and he’s getting that thousand-yard glare on the sidelines. Confused gaze. I’m not recommending Sark bench Arch, but something must change or this gem, this all-world recruit, will mentally tank. If not already.

All responsibility lies with the coaches. They recruited four- and five-star players. They are known for mentoring men. Check the latest draft picks. But they’re failing this team. One way or another. Either way, personnel, preparation, or messaging must alter. Because what the coaches are doing isn’t working.

Imagine starting the year as the nation’s top preseason pick! Remember mocking the Aggies baseball team for the same? Texas fans will hear it everywhere this week.

Did the season end? The Longhorns’ journey to the Swamp will likely haunt the team and supporters for years.

Beat the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Shootout at Cotton Bowl Stadium next week and everything is OK again. For at least a week.
