Why Russell Wilson's visit with the Browns could benefit the Giants

According to ESPN, Russell Wilson, the Super Bowl XLVIII champion, will visit the Browns on Thursday before heading to East Rutherford to meet with the Giants on Friday.

This is wonderful news for the Giants.

You read that correctly.

Despite general manager Joe Schoen’s desire for both a new quarterback and a winning club by 2025, the primary focus of the offseason was to identify the future quarterback.

Simply ask co-owner John Mara.

“That’s obviously the No. 1 issue for us going into this offseason: finding our quarterback of the future,” Mara stated in early January. “Whether that be via the draft or acquiring a veteran, it’s going to be up to (Schoen and coach Brian Daboll) to decide, ultimately.”

Cleveland’s pursuit of Wilson, who, at 36, is plainly not a long-term quarterback answer, would push the Giants one step closer to that aim. The “why” is simple: Wilson would most likely rule out the Browns, who have the No. 2 choice, as a QB-needy team in April’s draft.

The Titans are set to select Cam Ward with the first pick. They bolstered their offensive line in free agency and have not been linked to any veteran quarterbacks. Giants supporters should probably give up on their hopes of trading up for Ward.

The Browns, however, are attempting to field a competitive club in 2025 (at least that’s what they promised Myles Garrett) and are unlikely to waste the second selection on another quarterback, especially with Deshaun Watson’s albatross of a contract still on the books.

The Giants could easily get Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders without making a trade up.

Is Sanders the quarterback of the future? Maybe. Maybe not. But he would at least be a lottery ticket for the most significant position in sports. Giants fans would finally have optimism after a long time.

All of this is contingent on Wilson’s meeting with the Browns going so well that he signs with them. Let’s see if GM Andrew Berry can persuade him.
