Rams release WR Cooper Kupp

Rams release WR Cooper Kupp

Cooper Kupp is no longer with the Los Angeles Rams.

The organization said on Wednesday that the top wide receiver was free. More than a month after Kupp revealed that Los Angeles intended to trade him this offseason, the Rams made their move.

In a social media statement on February 3, Kupp stated, “I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships.”

“I don’t agree with the decision and always believed (my career) was going to begin and end in LA,” Kupp said. “I have taken so much pride in playing alongside my teammates for the LA community, so thank you for embracing my family and making this such a special place for us.”

Following his release, he bid the squad and the city a heartfelt farewell.

A few days after it was announced that Los Angeles would cut Kupp if he hadn’t been dealt by Wednesday, the start of the new league year, the team decided to cut him. On Sunday, the Rams signed three-time first-team All-Pro wide receiver Daavante Adams to join Puka Nacua and catch passes from Matthew Stafford, effectively replacing Kupp.

According to Spotrac, the Rams will have $7.52 million in cap space as a result of the decision to cut Kupp.

Coming off a 2024 season in which he gathered in 67 receptions for 710 yards and six scores, Kupp will turn 32 in June. Due to ankle ailments, he only participated in 12 games. He played in 12 or fewer games for the third consecutive season. He was recuperating from surgery following a high ankle sprain in Week 10 of the 2022 season, which prevented him from playing until Week 5 of 2023.

Kupp was possibly the NFL’s top wide receiver prior to those injuries. By leading the NFL in receptions (145), yards (1,947), and touchdowns (16), he won the receiving triple crown in 2021. With eight receptions for 92 yards and two scores, he won Super Bowl MVP and helped the Rams defeat the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI that season.

Even though he is no longer at his best, Kupp rises to the top of the receiver market. As of Wednesday afternoon, Amari Cooper, Keenan Allen, and Stefon Diggs are among the other well-known wide receivers available as free agents.
