Terry Rozier Illegal Betting: NBA Player Under Current Investigation

Rozier, who currently plays for the Miami Heat after having previously played for the Hornets, has not been accused of any misconduct or charged with a crime, according to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story first.

According to the NBA, it investigated the situation at the time and found no violations of league regulations.

In a statement initially provided to The Wall Street Journal and subsequently to other media, NBA spokesman Mike Bass stated, “In March 2023, the NBA was alerted to suspicious betting activity relating to Terry Rozier’s performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans.” “After conducting an inquiry, the league found no evidence of an NBA rule infraction. We have been assisting with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York’s investigation into this problem, which we are now aware of.”

The office of the U.S. Attorney did not immediately respond. When contacted for comment, the Heat cited the NBA statement.

“We are certain that the ongoing government inquiry will reach the same conclusion as the NBA’s 2023 investigation, which found that Mr. Rozier had committed no crime at all,” Rozier’s lawyer Jim Trusty stated.

The game in question involving Rozier took place on March 23, 2023, during a game between the Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans. Rozier played the opening nine minutes and thirty-six seconds of that game. He did not play again that season, and he did not return that evening due to a foot injury.

Rozier being sidelined for the season’s last games did not seem all that uncommon because Charlotte had eight games left and was out of the running for the playoffs.

Rozier concluded the first quarter of that March 23 game with five points, four rebounds, and two assists. It was a solid quarter, but it was far less than his typical game-long total.

When it became clear after the first quarter that Rozier would not be returning to the game, some bettors were incensed with sportsbooks. According to posts from March 23, 2023, which are still available online, many of them took to social media to claim that something “shady” had happened with the prop bets involving his stats for the evening.

An photograph of a ticket for a three-leg parlay, where a $65 wager would have yielded $401.95, was shared by a dissatisfied bettor. In the NHL game between Tampa Bay and Ottawa, the bettor had over 6.5 goals and over 8.5 rebounds for Julius Randle, both of which were successful. However, Rozier ended much behind his prop bet of 32.5 points, assists, and rebounds, thus the ticket didn’t cash. Rozier was chosen by the bettor to surpass those figures.

On March 23, a few sportsbooks offered Rozier prop bets, with his average stats for the evening being 21.5 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds. These were removed just hours before the Charlotte-New Orleans game began. It was unclear why that occurred, and some bettors openly questioned why that odd move had occurred. Prior to the game, Rozier was not on the team’s injury report.

The 30-year-old Rozier is currently in the third year of a $96.3 million, four-year contract.

A similar inquiry into Porter’s performance and “prop bets”—bets in which bettors can predict whether a player would meet a specific statistical benchmark during a game—led to his disqualification. After a league investigation revealed that Porter had given sports bettors access to private information and placed wagers on games, including betting on his team to lose, the NBA banned him for life in April of last year.

Porter entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire fraud after facing criminal charges. His punishment is still pending.

After receiving information from “licensed sports betting companies and an entity that monitors legal betting markets” on odd gambling trends related to Porter’s performance in a game versus Sacramento on March 20, 2024, the league launched the Porter investigation. According to the league, Porter provided a bettor with knowledge regarding his personal health state before the game, and another person, who is known to be an NBA bettor, wagered $80,000 that Porter would fail to meet the parlay numbers that were set for him through an online sportsbook. $1.1 million would have been gained on the wager.

Before the game on March 23, 2023, bettors positioned the unders on Rozier’s stats, especially rebounds, in an attempt to get as much money down as possible.
