Saquon Barkley’s Reverse Hurdle Leaves Eagles ‘Speechless’

Saquon Barkley's Reverse Hurdle Leaves Eagles 'Speechless'

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni was “speechless” following running back Saquon Barkley’s reverse hurdle over a defender in a 28-23 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“It was the best play I’ve ever seen,” Sirianni commented. “What I think is so fantastic is that kids all around the country and in Philadelphia will be attempting to make that play, talking about it, and mimicking it while playing backyard football or peewee football. They’re not going to make it; I feel he’s the only one in the world who can accomplish it. I am speechless. “It was unbelievable.”

During a third-and-6 situation in the second quarter, Barkley grabbed a throw from Jalen Hurts in the flat, broke a tackle, and executed a spin move on Devin Lloyd, causing him to fall to the ground. Barkley was just warming up. He stepped with his back to CB Jarrian Jones, ascended, and leapfrogged Jones for a further 5 yards, resulting in a 14-yard gain.

The supporters in attendance rose to their feet and stared at each other in disbelief.

“I need to give credit to God, man. I won’t lie… I believe God granted me the talent and instincts to play this position. Barkley said that sometimes you have to let go and allow God and your instincts to take over.

This was not Barkley’s first time doing this move; he jumped backward over an Iowa opponent during his sophomore year at Penn State, but that one “wasn’t as cool.” This one was off the charts.

“Crazy,” receiver DeVonta Smith said. “I ain’t never seen nothing like it.”

Barkley finished the day with 199 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns. He is only the second player in Philadelphia Eagles history to have 1,000+ scrimmage yards and 8+ touchdowns in eight games, behind LeSean McCoy, who was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Barkley was not the only Eagle that stood out against Jacksonville. Smith’s one-handed catch in the back of the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter was crucial in the game, since A.J. Brown suffered a knee injury at the end of the first half.

Sirianni provided no update on Brown’s status, as he did not play in the second half.

“It’s always tough when he goes down because he’s such a dynamic player, such a big part of this team and this offense,” Smith told the media. “If he goes down, I feel like I need to step up. For me, I’m always up for a challenge.”

In the third quarter, fellow receiver Jahan Dotson made a spectacular catch, skying over a defender and tipping the ball to himself for a 36-yard gain along the left sideline.

“I feel like there were three plays in that game: Dotson, Smitty and Saquon, plays that just make you go, ‘Wow, this is why I love watching football,'” Lane Johnson, the right-handed tackle, said.
