Bobby Witt Jr. Joins First-Time Gold Glove Winners

Matt Chapman, a third baseman for the San Francisco Giants, won his fifth Gold Glove, while Bobby Witt Jr., a shortstop for the Kansas City Royals, was one of 14 first-time winners.

Rawlings revealed on Sunday that Cleveland’s Andrés Giménez and Steven Kwan, along with Arizona’s Christian Walker and Chicago Cubs’ Ian Happ, won for the third year in a row.

Giménez and Kwan became the only teammates to win three consecutive awards since Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy of the Baltimore Orioles in 2012-2014.

Brenton Doyle, Rockies center fielder, won for the second consecutive season.

This was Chapman’s first Gold Glove in the National League. He won three with Oakland and one for Toronto.

Finalists for third place included Nolan Arenado, a 10-time Gold Glove winner from St. Louis, and Ryan McMahon from Colorado.

“The National League has a lot of really good defensive third basemen,” Chapman remarked in a video call. “I was able to come over here and win it, so I thought that was pretty cool and to get one in the American League and the National League now means a lot.”

Six teams had two Gold Glove winners each, including the Guardians, Colorado, Kansas City, Milwaukee, San Francisco, and Seattle.

In addition to Witt, other AL first-time winners include Royals pitcher Seth Lugo, Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Minnesota first baseman Carlos Santana, Houston third baseman Alex Bregman, Toronto center fielder Daulton Varsho, Boston right fielder Wilyer Abreu, and Mariners utility player Dylan Moore.

NL first-time winners include Atlanta pitcher Chris Sale, Giants catcher Patrick Bailey, Milwaukee second baseman Brice Turang and right fielder Sal Frelick, Colorado shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, and Pittsburgh utility player Jared Triolo.

“It’s obviously an honor,” Frelick added. “A little surreal, still. Obviously, I think it’s more cooler to do it with Brice.”

Bregman received a $50,000 bonus. Giménez, Lugo, Moore, and Witt each won $50,000, while Santana received $25,000.

There were 14 first-time winners in 2022.

Managers and up to six coaches from each team voted, however they were unable to select players for their own club. Since 2013, voting has included a Society for American Baseball Research defense index, which accounts for around 25% of the total.

The utility category is based on a SABR calculation and extra defensive data.
