Following consecutive setbacks, the New York Jets abruptly terminated Robert Saleh as head coach, resulting in a 2-3 record for the year.

Although owner Woody Johnson claimed that he conferred with general manager Joe Douglas, he ultimately stated that he made the decision independently.

Johnson did not disclose the factors that influenced his decision to relieve Saleh of his responsibilities, except to state that he believed it was the appropriate time to do so. Nevertheless, a seasoned radio host identified Saleh’s wardrobe selection during the team’s London contest against the Minnesota Vikings as a contributing factor. Some individuals on social media expressed their dissatisfaction with Saleh, who is of Lebanese descent, for donning the flag on his sleeve in light of the current situation in the country.

Hezbollah, the military organization in Lebanon that is supported by Iran, has a history of violence against Israel, which has only intensified during the Israel-Hamas conflict. The flag was observed on the day that Israel bombed Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, one day prior to the one-year anniversary of the Hamas assaults on Israel on October 7.

Nevertheless, Saleh wore the Lebanese flag patch last year as part of the NFL Heritage Program, which encourages players and coaches to commemorate their cultural heritage with helmet insignia and patches on gameday. The patch was also worn by Saleh earlier this season.

Saleh, the son of Lebanese parents who immigrated to the United States prior to his birth, became the first Muslim head coach in the NFL when the Jets appointed him in January 2021.
