Howdy from college football, which is back and better than before.

This year, there are just nine conference championship games. A 12-team College Football Playoff is in place. There are conferences practically everywhere in the country.

And the Football Bowl Subdivision has expanded once again in size. Greetings from Kennesaw State, the Atlanta suburb that joined Conference USA and the FBS in 2015. The program started play in 2015.

These rankings had 130 teams at the beginning of 2017, dropped to 76 at the beginning of the pandemic-affected 2020 season, then increased to 130 in 2021, 131 in 2022, 133 in 2023, and finally, once more, to 134. (In 2025, two more schools will join.)

Notes: First off, it’s true that this is a subjective task. I consider advanced analytical ranks and look at them. I make my tweaks throughout the season based on the teams that I’ve seen and defeated. The preseason standings are merely approximations. I make an effort not to cling to them too tightly. They will alter as new information becomes available, and it typically takes a few weeks for everyone to obtain sufficient information to draw firm conclusions.

By year’s end, I do hold myself accountable. Here are the final 2023 rankings and their preseason position so you can see how I performed the previous season. Out of my preseason top 25, seventeen teams made it into my final top 25. Not that awful, I wouldn’t say. However, I also adore it when a finisher who is not in the top 50, such as Tulane, Washington, and Missouri in the last two years, places in the top 10.

Who will be victorious in 2024? Who might surprise you? Who advances to the Playoffs as an at-large selection and who wins each conference? Who emerges as the second Group of Five program to qualify for the CFP? Who is the last person to finish?

Let’s get right in as we enter Week 0.

College Football Rankings: 1-10

Here are the College Football Rankings form 1 to 10:

Is Ohio State able to defeat Michigan? The Buckeyes have a squad full of veterans who saw their best players return to school and win titles, along with quality transfer arrivals like running back Quinshon Judkins and safety Caleb Downs. And a victory over Michigan this time might not be necessary to make the CFP.

Georgia still has a lot of talent, but how will the offense function without standout receiver Ladd McConkey and tight end Brock Bowers? In the last three drafts, this program has had fifteen players selected in the first two rounds. With Alabama and Clemson scheduled for the first four weeks, the Bulldogs will play in a major game much sooner than they did the previous season.

Dan Lanning is 22-5 at Oregon; three of his defeats came in the hands of Washington. Bo Nix’s replacement, former Oklahoma and UCLA quarterback Dillon Gabriel, should keep the Ducks winning, and the fact that Michael Penix Jr. is no longer at Washington also helps.With a CFP appearance last year, Texas finally lived up to its potential. However, the season-ending injuries to Christian Clark and CJ Baxter, two running backs, are alarming, and they will put more pressure on quarterback Quinn Ewers in the absence of receivers Xavier Worthy and AD Mitchell.

Under Kalen DeBoer, Alabama is embarking on a new chapter. Quarterback Josh Allen Milroe exuded confidence during SEC media days, abandoning his competition for the starting job. It wouldn’t surprise me if he made significant progress under this personnel.

Ole Miss committed to the 2024 season with full knowledge of the advantageous schedule; the offensive line and receivers are highly skilled, and the defense should improve.Given their far more advantageous schedule, Notre Dame fans would be devastated if the Fighting Irish were to miss out on the CFP as an at-large team. They ought to be favorites in all of the other games if they triumph at Texas A&M to start the season.

Given their recent coaching change and quarterbacking uncertainty, Michigan is hard to anticipate. Look out if Alex Orji can play as well as he does in the EA Sports video game and if Donovan Edwards can get back to his national championship game form. This time, there won’t be any scheduling queries because the first four weeks of the schedule include games against Texas and USC.Despite their heavy defeats, Florida State is still the ACC favorite going forward, especially with quarterback DJ Uiagalelei back in the conference (they play Clemson on October 5).

In order to take advantage of a favorable schedule, Missouri, which completed 2023 as a top-10 team, returns the majority of its essential players, including great receiver Luther Burden. The Tigers have a legitimate chance to make it to the CFP.

College Football Rankings: 11-25

Here are the College Football Rankings from 11 to 25:

With tight end Brett Kuithe and quarterback Cam Rising back, along with the majority of their excellent defense, Utah appears to be the Big 12 favorite.Penn State… Like with Texas before last year, I’ll have to see it before I believe it. More than anybody, the Nittany Lions would profit from a 12-team CFP, but I’m still dubious about quarterback Drew Allar and the absence of strong pass-catching options.With new quarterbacks, Tennessee and LSU should both continue to be exciting and entertaining. Although I think Jackson Arnold and Oklahoma have a bright future ahead of them, I can’t seem to shake the memory of their six-turnover bowl loss to Arizona. I hope that was an isolated incident.

Though I don’t like Clemson’s recent trajectory, this should still be a top-10 talent roster because the team hasn’t been as outstanding at quarterback, receiver, or defensive line as it was when it was winning national titles. Is Miami talented enough to move past all of those moments when it stumbles? Two significant additions are running back Damien Martinez and quarterback Cam Ward. Although Mario Cristobal isn’t in danger, you still want to see tangible improvement.

Despite all the jokes about Iowa, this team has won eight games in a full 12-game season in the last ten years, and it has won at least ten games in two of the last three years. Greater respect is due to the Hawkkeyes. Indeed, the schedule is quite advantageous if they can just play a mediocre offense. Iowa State is underappreciated in my opinion and should be a Big 12 contender. The Cyclones return nearly every member from the previous campaign, and unlike the previous year, there is no unexpected gambling scandal looming large.

Will Kansas State and Kansas be able to compete for the Big 12 despite having two of the most dynamic offenses in the nation?Ollie Gordon II, Oklahoma State’s top running back in the nation, is a regular underdog, but the team won ten games last year. Talent hasn’t been an issue for Texas A&M, and quarterback Conner Weigman and the other players should be able to perform better under new coach Mike Elko’s coaching staff.

Under Brent Pry, Virginia Tech appeared to have turned the corner as it won six of its final nine games in the previous campaign. This feels like a step forward year into something bigger, with nearly everyone back. With quarterback Noah Fittipan, a developing star, at Arizona, new coach Brent Brennan enters a favorable scenario.

College Football Rankings: 26-50

Here are the College Football Rankings from 26 to 50.

Having won at least eight games in six of the previous seven seasons, NC State is another program that merits greater recognition (but never more than nine victories). Don’t count out the Wolfpack, especially with excellent transfer quarterback Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina.After winning its first conference championship in forty years, SMU advances to the ACC. Although there is talent there, does it have enough depth to support it?

After two seasons under Lincoln Riley, USC suffered a significant setback. Can D’Anton Lynn, the new defensive coordinator, strengthen the team against a challenging schedule that includes Michigan in Week 4 and LSU in Week 1? Can Miller Moss step in for Caleb Williams?

Memphis, Boise State, and Liberty are the Group of Five favorites to begin the season. If it comes down to it, Liberty has by far the easiest schedule, but how will the CFP committee weigh in after last year’s Fiesta Bowl landslide? In Week 2, Boise State plays Oregon, while in Week 3, Memphis plays Florida State.

For years, believing in Nebraska has been fool’s gold, but I sincerely hope that things will improve. The defense improved significantly in Matt Rhule’s debut season last year, the schedule appears favorable, and Dylan Raiola should have ample opportunity to settle disputes on the field.With eight preseason top-25 opponents (and four top-10 teams) on the schedule, Florida might perform better than its final record. Washington, the national runner-up from the previous season, is extremely unpredictable and changes nearly every player on the team.

Will Rogers, the quarterback, at least has experience.Although Fresno State might be a G5 contender, the loss of head coach Jeff Tedford just prior to camp was painful.Coach Brent Key of Georgia Tech has subtly restored the Yellow Jackets’ program to strength. There, he’s doing a great job.Fans of Cal, South Carolina, and Texas Tech would prefer to see a little more than just a bowl game as these teams prepare for their seasons.

College Football Rankings: 51-75

Here are the College Football Rankings from 51 to 75.

Everybody has emotions about Colorado. Although the schedule should be easier than it was a year ago and the Buffs will undoubtedly be better, they must defeat North Dakota State in the season opener. Watch UNLV for a G5 CFP berth in the event that one of the FCS quarterback transfers performs well. After improving from 1-11 to 7-6 in coach Alex Golesh’s first season, USF appears ready for a breakthrough campaign, especially with star quarterback Byrum Brown back.The Bobcats should continue to score points and win since Texas State advanced to their first bowl game last season with an 8-5 record and the addition of quarterback Jordan McCloud, the current Sun Belt player of the year.

David Braun was Northwestern’s interim coach, and the team finished 8-5. In 2024, with a more difficult schedule and no real home stadium, what will happen? Thomas Castellanos provides new Boston College coach Bill O’Brien with a reliable quarterback position. Air Force must replace almost its whole starting offense, as Army goes from being an independent to the American Athletic Conference.

Late in the transfer window, Michigan State lost a few important players, but quarterback Aidan Chiles, a former four-star prospect from Oregon State, remains the cornerstone under new coach Jonathan Smith. Although it’s difficult to anticipate the Pac-2 teams because they both lost important players to the realignment portal, their schedules will heavily feature games in the Mountain West.

College Football Rankings: 76-100

Here are the College Football Rankings from 76 to 100:

Under coach Rich Rodriguez, Jacksonville State made a strong FBS start, winning nine games and a bowl, but the Gamecocks will need to replace a few important players.With its up-tempo offense and new coach Sean Lewis, San Diego State should be much more entertaining to watch, but how will the team’s historically strong defense fare?San Jose State has also appointed former Navy captain Ken Niumatalolo as their new coach. It seems that I score lower on Illinois and higher on Indiana than most people do.

I admire the additions made by the new Indiana Hoosiers coach, Curt Cignetti, who will be happy to tell you that he has been successful everywhere he has gone, even with former Ohio quarterback Kurtis Rourke.Illinois lost a number of important players to the NFL, but the schedule isn’t too awful, and if coin tosses go Illinois’ way, a bowl game isn’t out of the question.

Colorado State seems like yet another G5 squad with room to grow. It prevented important players, such as receiver Tory Horton and quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, from accessing the portal. In Week 3, Deion Sanders and company travel to Fort Collins for a rematch.Arkansas State believes it is in the same situation. After winning Sun Belt freshman of the year, quarterback Jalen Raynor made a comeback, and his excellent recruiting by Butch Jones paid out on the field.Regaining its position as the lowest-ranked Power 4 team at the conclusion of the previous season is Vanderbilt. A breakthrough seems much more distant as the SEC becomes even more strict.

College Football Rankings: 101-134

Here are the College Football Rankings from 101 to 134:

With all of its top receivers, including quarterback Braden Schager, returning, Hawaii appears ready to challenge for a bowl game.Despite having made three straight bowls, Utah State is in a same predicament as Northwestern was the previous year. In the offseason, interim coach Nate Dreiling joined the staff after head coach Blake Anderson was fired just before the season. Several MAC schools that will be in the running for bowls late in the season are among the teams in this cluster.

I think Dell McGee was a great addition for Georgia State, and CJ Beasley, the former running back from Coastal Carolina, was a great addition as well (before the coaching change).Unexpectedly, after making a comeback to bowl games, East Carolina fell to 2-10. We’ll have to witness a reversal, but coach Mike Houston is optimistic about it. In its FBS debut, Sam Houston went 3-9, but it won three of its last four games and lost five by a single point. There may be a chance for a better job conclusion. Middle Tennessee, a program with a larger ceiling than its previous one, has hired Derek Mason as its next coach. However, it can take some time.

All things considered, Bronco Mendenhall’s hiring by New Mexico may have been the most remarkable move of the coaching carousel. Devon Dampier, the quarterback, is someone he knows at the school and might be a valuable addition. Temple finished 3-9 and lost E.J. Warner, their leading quarterback, to Rice. There will be a climb up.Last year, UMass supporters said they wouldn’t place 133rd. They then defeated New Mexico State in their opening game, but ultimately finished 3-9 and lost to Michigan State in their finest comeback. Some of these tasks are simply too difficult.

Kennesaw State makes its debut at position 134. As recently as 2021, the Owls were a consistent top-10 team and a force in the FCS. But when they redshirted players in front of the switch, they fell to 5-6 the next year and 3-6 the year before. Greetings and welcome to the celebration.
