For the 2024 college football season, a number of uncertainties have been raised by transfers, coaching changes, and conference restructuring. As a result, two of the College Football Playoff teams from the previous season may have difficult campaigns. To ease the pressure on a few coaches who are under fire, they must demonstrate improvement. Additionally, a few clubs stand to gain from a change of scenery.

Miami: Bounce Back

After leading the Coral Gables to a 12–13 record in his first two seasons, head coach Mario Cristobal is facing pressure. However, with major additions made through the transfer portal, including quarterback Cam Ward, running back Damien Martinez, and defensive ends Elijah Alston and Tyler Baron, the Hurricanes should improve on their 7–6 record from the previous season.

Miami faces a challenging first game against Florida, but may end the two-game stretch with a 5-1 or 6-1 record against Louisville and Florida State. A victory in one or both of those contests ought to guarantee a seamless conclusion to the regular season’s last four games and the kind of record that Cristobal was expected to produce upon his hiring.

Utah: Bounce Back

Utah’s schedule presents no challenge, therefore the conference should welcome their relocation to the Big 12. (In Week 4, Oklahoma State may have some thoughts about it.) The Utes could easily win the Big 12 and the conference championship game.

With running back Micah Bernard, tight end Brant Kuithe, and quarterback Cameron Rising back for a seventh season of eligibility, the offense should be successful. The Huskers should remain competitive while Raiola picks up skills on the job thanks to a defense that ranked 11th in the country in yards allowed per game.

Traveling to Ohio State and Indiana might sabotage any momentum and demonstrate whether Rhule’s team has improved. Nebraska’s final three games against USC, Wisconsin, and Iowa could be difficult.

Texas A&M: Bounce Back

Jimbo Fisher is no longer around, as is his inability to live up to the expectations of his enormous deal. With Conner Weigman established as the starting quarterback and new coach Mike Elko taking over, Texas A&M can now start over.

Connor Weigman, a sophomore quarterback for Texas A&M, had a fantastic game on Saturday.

A foot injury kept Weigman out of action for four games, but he still managed to complete 69% of his throws for 979 yards and eight touchdowns. If Weigman keeps healthy, a strong trio of receivers in Noah Thomas, Jahdae Walker, and Moose Muhammad III should help him easily surpass that output. With a defense captained by edge rusher Nic Scourton and a defensive-minded coach in Elko, the offense shouldn’t have to bear the weight.

Baylor: Bounce Back

Dave Aranda, entering his fifth season, is expected to turn around the Bears following a 3-9 season. It’s easy to conclude that Baylor isn’t all that bad. However, the attack should be stabilized by quarterback Dequan Finn. Ashtyn Hawkins, a transfer from Toledo, Ketron Jackson Jr., and Monaray Baldwin are three of his strong receivers. The transfer completed 63% of his passes for 2,657 yards and 22 touchdowns.

But for Baylor to recover, their awful defense—ranked No. 110 in the country in yards allowed—must improve. Matt Powledge, the defensive coordinator, will need to figure out how to rush the passer in order to support a secondary that includes Tevin Williams III, Caden Jenkins (who has three interceptions), and Château Reed.

Oklahoma: Disappoint

Oklahoma, welcome to the SEC. The Sooners’ schedule for this season probably won’t be quite as friendly as it was last year, when they finished with a 10-3 record. The SEC should immediately put up a fight with games against Auburn and Tennessee, then take on rival Texas in the Red River Rivalry.

From there, the schedule doesn’t get much easier, particularly since their next three regular-season opponents are LSU, Alabama, and Missouri. That’s a difficult way for Jackson Arnold, the sophomore quarterback replacing Dillon Gabriel, to make his debut. However, linebackers Danny Stutsman and Kip Lewis lead a potent defense under Brent Venables, which will propel the Sooners to victory.

Michigan: Disappoint

After winning a national title and going 15-0, there’s only one direction to go: down. And with head coach Jim Harbaugh heading to the Los Angeles Chargers, taking defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and strength coach Ben Herbert with him, it appears the Wolverines will take a nosedive.

On the field, it may be challenging for new coach Sherrone Moore to duplicate last season’s success due to the loss of key players including J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum, Junior Colson, and Mike Sainristil, as well as a redesigned offensive line and quarterback instability. In addition, Michigan has a tough schedule that includes rival Ohio State, Texas, and Oregon—three teams vying for a national championship—among them.

Washington: Disappoint

The runner-up for the national title the previous year, Michigan, also suffered significant losses with the coaching staff and on the field. Head coach Kalen DeBoer left for Alabama, while quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and receiver Rome Odunze went on to play in the NFL.

Unlike at Arizona, Jedd Fisch, the next coach, won’t have to oversee a rebuilding project. However, he will also be acclimating to Stephen Belichick, a new defensive coordinator. His first season won’t be any easier now that they’re in the Big Ten, especially with matchups against Iowa, Penn State, and Oregon. Indiana, USC, and Michigan are also formidable rivals.

Arizona: Disappoint

With Jedd Fisch heading to Washington, maybe it’s appropriate to call Arizona a bust with lowered hopes. But with the Wildcats heading to the Big 12, it seems like a difficult job to replicate the 10-3 record from the previous season. It won’t be simple to start the conference campaign with road games at Utah and Kansas State.

Noah Fifita, the quarterback, had a fantastic season, completing 72% of his throws for 2,869 yards and 25 touchdowns. Under new offensive coordinator Dino Babers and head coach Brent Brennan, he might improve on that. Tetairoa McMillan, a receiver with 90 receptions for 1,402 yards and 10 touchdowns, is also someone to keep an eye on. It can take some time for a defense that was rebuilt through transfers to gel.

Colorado: Disappoint

For individuals who question or criticize the Buffaloes and coach Deion Sanders, receipts are kept on file. After Colorado’s 4-8 record in Coach Prime’s debut season, many are already questioning whether he is being overhyped. Attending the Big 12 may not increase those odds.

With Heisman candidate Shedeur Sanders at quarterback, passing to transfer Will Sheppard and two-way wonder Travis Hunter, Colorado’s attack should be explosive. Can the offensive line better protect Sanders now that they have Jordan Seaton, a five-star recruit?

The Buffaloes defense, which finished the previous season ranked fourth in the country, doesn’t seem to have improved in terms of pass rush efficiency. That won’t benefit Hunter, Shilo Sanders, and transfer Preston Hodge, who should form a strong secondary.
